Phonics & Numbers
Phonics
Our phonics sessions, led by an Early Years teacher, are designed to be both developmentally appropriate and fun. We focus on Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds, which builds essential skills like sound discrimination, rhythm, and blending — laying a strong foundation for formal phonics instruction in school.
These sessions cover seven key aspects including environmental sounds, body percussion, rhyme, and oral blending. Through playful activities like singing, clapping, and sound exploration, children develop phonological awareness and confidence in language. This approach fosters a lifelong love of language and ensures a smooth transition into structured phonics learning.
Mathematics
We believe mathematical development is best achieved through playful, real-life contexts that children can relate to. Our sessions are hands-on, encouraging children to explore numbers, shapes, patterns, and spatial reasoning through activities like:
- Building with blocks
- Measuring and sorting objects
- Counting and using props in number songs
- Using ten frames and outdoor resources to visually represent numbers
We also encourage natural mathematical skills such as subitising — the ability to instantly recognise quantities in a small group — which is an early predictor of future success in mathematics.
Children learn about:
- One-to-one correspondence
- Part-whole relationships
- Number composition and cardinality
All taught in a fun, engaging, and meaningful way.
